Academic advising at NSCAD is a student-focused, collaborative process that helps you get the most out of your university experience. Whether your goals are academic, creative, or career-oriented, your advisor is here to help you plan a path forward. From selecting the right courses to meeting graduation requirements, we’re here to guide you—every step of the way.

What to Expect in an Advising Appointment

Your advisor can help you with:

  • Reviewing your academic progress and remaining requirements
  • Exploring program options (BFA, BDes, BA), majors, and minors
  • Choosing courses, checking prerequisites, and understanding grade requirements
  • Understanding graduation requirements
  • Clarifying academic policies and procedures

Students are expected to:

  • Read the Academic Calendar carefully
  • Take responsibility for understanding program and course requirements
  • Familiarize themselves with university policies and academic regulations

Norbert Caparica

  • Norbert advises undergraduate students in their third and fourth year who have completed more than 60 credits toward their degrees, as well as incoming transfer students

Emily Shanahan

  • Emily advises Undergraduate students in their first and second year who have completed under 60 credits toward their degree, as well as new, incoming first-year students direct from high school.

  • Finn advises Visual Arts Certificate, Graduate, and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate students.

Crystal Bona

  • Crystal advises students who are interested in Exchange studies, as well as students who have questions related to Academic Appeals, Grade Appeals, issues related to Academic Standing, and other complex registration concerns.

During peak periods—such as add/drop, registration, and the start of a new semester—academic advising appointments fill up fast. To avoid delays, students are strongly encouraged to book appointments well in advance.

Keep an eye on your NSCAD email for updates from the Office of the Registrar. During peak times, we often offer drop-in hours where no appointment is needed.

If you have questions about a specific program or discipline, we also recommend meeting with the division chair for that area. They can provide expert guidance and support tailored to your field of study.
