Fall into Art at NSCAD Extended Studies


The air is a little brisk this week as we say goodbye to the summer and welcome in the fabulous Fall! Autumn is the perfect time to learn a new skill or develop an existing passion, and with our full line-up of art classes for children, youth, and adults in all mediums, now is the best time to practice & grow! Whether it’s perfecting your printmaking skills in Screenprinting on Paper, or exploring the abstract side of things in NEW! Abstract Painting, there’s lots to learn about this season!

NSCAD Extended Studies offers quality artistic classes to the community. Regardless of your current experience or abilities in starting Extended Studies classes, we’re here to help you grow & learn, and to have fun! Whether you’re interested in career or personal enrichment, taking courses as a stepping-stone to full-time studies, or just for the fun of it, we offer a wide range of short and long- term courses, workshops, open studios and online courses. For NSCAD Alumni and Seniors (65+), we offer 20% off all adult courses, so take a look and see what’s on highlight this term:

Pre-University Painting and Drawing for Teens

We’ve grown our Saturday Youth classes to include advanced lessons for the teens! Jack Ross leads Pre-University Prep: Drawing and Painting for ages 14-18, where students will learn more in-depth lessons about drawing, perspective, composition and more, balanced alongside lessons in acrylic painting. Jack teaches our ever-popular Painting Like the Impressionists and NEW! Landscape Painting for adults so students are in good hands to learn all about acrylics. These courses are geared towards increasing student’s abilites as they start looking to advanced education in the arts. In addition to these courses, we’re also welcoming back Saturday Ceramics for ages 10-12 and 13-18, as well as having our classic Saturday Art courses on offer for ages 5-7, 8-10,and 11-13 with Laura de Palma, Patrick Burgomaster, and Kyle Bridgett.

Jewellery is Back!

From a term on hiatus, Introductory Jewellery Making and Jewellery II are back! Both taught by Emily Wareham, the introductory course will teach you the most-used techniques of jewellers on a project-by-project basis. Designed to welcome every beginner, no prior experience for this course is necessary! In Jewellery II, Emily will go in-depth into more advanced subjects, while giving you the time and space to work on personal projects.
The NSCAD University Jewellery studios are some of the most popular and sought-after workspaces in the city, with access to every jeweller’s tool, torch, and workbench you can imagine. Spots are limited to 12 in each course, so be sure to check it out!

Afternoon Classes

To help accommodate the varied schedules of folks, we’re bringing back our most popular classes as daytime sessions! For this term, Introductory Acrylic, Introductory Oil, and Introductory Watercolour Painting are offered as both an evening (6:30-9:30pm) and an afternoon session (1:30-4:30pm) at the NSCAD Port Campus (1107 Marginal Road), taught by Charlotte Marble and Bob Williams. Patrick Burgomaster, all-around Renaissance man, drawing instructor extraordinaire and Weird Al Yankovic fan, will be teaching drawing lessons to the beginner and the experienced in Introductory Drawing C and Drawing II for adults. Introductory Jewellery Making will be held on Sundays from 1-4pm at the NSCAD Fountain Campus (5163 Duke Street), led by Emily Wareham. One of the city’s most famous calligraphers, Lisa MacPherson of Scribble & Script, has expanded her fan-favourite calligraphy courses to be more in-depth and offered on Saturdays (Introduction to Modern Calligraphy from 10am-1pm and Modern Calligraphy: Beyond the Basics from 2pm-5pm). She’s also bringing a new course to our Fall lineup, NEW! Calligraphy and Watercolour: a Botanical Explorations workshop! For two Saturday sessions, Lisa will guide your hand through strokes of the pen and the brush in studying the similar forms between plants and lettering.

Digital Media: a Medley

More and more people are finding the need to expand their skillset with creative computer programs. For those who are looking to grow their digital media skills, help supplement their CV, or get hands-on experience for work, we are pleased to have Introductory Adobe Photoshop, Introductory Adobe InDesign, Introductory Adobe Illustrator, and Intro to Adobe Premiere on offer. These courses offer a comprehensive look into the tools, shortcuts, and abilities of what Adobe Creative Suite programs have to offer. In addition to the 10 weeks of tuition, registered students also have access to the NSCAD University Multimedia lab, in order to complete assignments and practice.
