Background

Greg Sims is an assistant professor of jewellery design and metalsmithing at NSCAD University. He holds an MA from the School of Jewellery (Birmingham Institute of Design) Birmingham City University (2003) and completed undergraduate studies (AOCAD) at OCAD University (1999).

Sims has also organized and curated Making It Real, an international exhibition of digitally fabricated objects as part of SNAG Conference, Toronto (2003), was a designer and researcher with the @lab Research Facility at NSCAD and Dalhousie University, developing and manufacturing collapsible, responsive structures on an architectural scale (tents, stage sets and furniture) (2007–2011) and his client work includes commissioned artworks, prototyping and product development for Nova Scotia Association of Architects, Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation, Arrivals & Departures and others.

His research focuses on the integration of advanced digital design and fabrication technologies within the traditions of jewellery craft & making.

He is currently the co-investigator on a SSHRC funded project entitled, Thinking through craft and the digital turn: studio practice, technology, and pedagogy within Canadian art and design universities. In collaboration with faculty and researchers at 5 Canadian art/design universities, the project investigates the history, attitudes and experiences of students & faculty, in learning, teaching and integrating digital approaches in craft. http://www.craftandthedigitalturn.com/
