LARA STURZENBAUM

Let us introduce you to Lara Sturzenbaum, a fourth-year student majoring in jewellery design and metalsmithing! Lara’s work is inspired by the region where she was born, Patagonia. Being away from home has taught her tons of things but mostly to value where she comes from so she often takes inspiration from the breathtaking landscapes and skies.

Hometown: Rio Gallegos, Santa Cruz, Argentina

What made you want to become an artist?
When I was 10 years old I began making jewellery with plastic beads but as time passed, those beads became natural stones. In 2016 I met a jeweller in a small village in New Zealand who taught me how to solder. That day I fell in love with jewellery and I knew it was what I wanted to do the rest of my life.

What made you want to attend NSCAD?
In Argentina jewellery design as a degree does not exist. So I began looking for universities abroad, and I found NSCAD.

To see more about Lara and her work, check out her Instagram page @larasturzenbaum and @malercass !

Work featured:
Voltéame
Sterling silver, nickel silver and enamelled copper hydraulic pressed forms, 2019.
(Voltéame translates to “turn me around” in English)

JACEY BRYNE

Meet Jacey Byrne, a fourth-year Interdisciplinary student focusing on animation and illustration. Jacey’s work is inspired by their own experiences, their family history, cartoons, video games and horror movies.

Hometown: Labrador City, NL

What made you want to become an artist?
I have a lot of family members who are artists, I think that’s the start of it. And I always really liked visual storytelling and narrative work, so I think that started it for me.

What made you attend NSCAD and what’s your favourite part about NSCAD?
It’s close enough to home, and I’ve loved most every prof I’ve had so far!

ZHAOYING (ZEE) LI

Meet Zhaoying (Zee) Li, a fourth year student majoring in Interdisciplinary Fine Art (Digital collage, Photography, Film) with a minor in Art History. Zee’s practice is inspired by things she finds beautiful and meaningful. “I constantly explore different themes and concepts, but I always try to make something aesthetically pleasing . And I always use colour to evoke an emotion from the audience. I always aim to create visual impact in my work.”

Hometown: Jiangmen, Guangdong, China

What made you want to become an artist?
Creative work is something I need to do. It keeps me from feeling depressed, so I feel like making art is what I was born to do.

What made you want to attend NSCAD?
I came to NSCAD because of how close it was to the Atlantic Ocean and I was drawn to the aesthetic of the Fountain campus. When I was 18, I made the quick decision to attend NSCAD based on intuition.

What is your favourite part about attending NSCAD?
I like that NSCAD does not force you to learn, that you have autonomy and freedom to decide what to do and how inclusive, open minded and flexible the learning environment is.
