In this lawless digital age, where everyone carries a camera in their pocket, taking a photo has never been more commonplace – and photography has never been more relevant or diverse as a medium. From highly technical set pieces to documentary stories to rapidly expanding cross-disciplinary experimentations, photography is having a moment. If you long to master lens-based image-making in all its forms, then our program is for you.

Course + Content

The program will teach you technical and artistic considerations of photography —including line, shape, form, texture, colour, size, and depth—in both digital and analog formats, all while balancing your technical skill with theoretical, historical, and conceptual knowledge.

Classes like “The Ethics and Politics of Photography,” “The Power of Persuasion” and “How to Decode a Portrait” move you from behind the lens into your empathy, exploring the power and responsibility inherent in capturing images. You’ll also study technical, historical, and theoretical issues in contemporary photography, gathering a critical understanding of the aesthetic, and social discourses within the practice.

The program includes internships with local photographers, media, and agencies as well as workshops with visiting practicing artists.

This program also offers the only art-school drone pilot-training course in Canada, which equips students with a Transport Canada small basic RPAS licence, allowing them to legally operate drones.

FOUNDATION PROGRAM: You will start your NSCAD degree with an immersive Foundation studies program. This first year introduces you to all the disciplines and practices we teach at NSCAD, and it will equip you with the critical and creative skills you need to thrive in art and design school.
