Background

Dr. Marylin McKay is a professor in the Division of Art History and Contemporary Culture. She holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Toronto and teaches courses in ancient, medieval and Canadian art history, as well as courses in the history of garden design and funerary art. Her publications include A National Soul. Canadian Mural Painting, 1860s-1930s (McGill-Queen’s UP, 2002); Picturing the Land. Narrating Territories in Canadian Landscape Art, 1500-1950 (McGill-Queen’s UP, 2011); chapters in The Social and The Real. Political Art of the 1930s in the Western Hemisphere (Penn State UP, 2006) and Internationalizing the History of American Art (Penn State UP, 2009); and articles in the Journal of Canadian Art History between 1993 and 2022. Dr. McKay’s most recent research focuses on English Canadian interest in Walt Whitman with publications in the Walt Whitman Quarterly (2012); the Journal of Canadian Art History (2022); and the completion of a biography of English Canadian Whitmanite, Flora MacDonald Denison (Of Her Time, Place and Race. Flora MacDonald Denison and Reform Activism in Early Twentieth-Century Toronto).
