Artist Statement

For Toronto-based fashion designer Lee Dekel, the name “100% Silk” stands for the brand’s dedication to exalted textiles. Each collection from her line is an investigation into cloth fashioned from traditional techniques such as hand dyeing, weaving and embroidery.

The shop and gallery she founded in 2018, 100% Silk Shop, is an extension of the line’s ethos: curating emerging brands from around the world that combine a distinctive vision with thoughtful construction and slow, handmade processes. Dekel and her team’s goal is to start a new dialogue around the word “handmade,” one that celebrates both the aesthetics and the story behind each piece.

In this talk, Dekel will speak about her path to setting up her internationally-recognized label and retail space, and her experience working with small-scale artisan-made textiles. She will share insights on operating a business sustainably alongside practicalities such as approaching retailers and how to price your work.
