Kent Monkman, Public Lecture Series

Kent Monkman
Sunday, October 14, 2:00 PM
Halifax Central Library, 5163 Spring Garden Road

Join artist Kent Monkman in a conversation at the Halifax Central Library about his artistic practice and the act of reconciling Canada’s ugly past with its First Peoples. This talk is in conjunction with Monkman’s new travelling large scale project, on view at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia October 14 to December 16. “Shame and Prejudice” takes the viewer on a journey through Canada’s history starting in the present and rewinding a hundred and fifty years before Confederation. As both artist and curator, Monkman’s exhibition includes his paintings, drawings and sculptural works in dialogue with historical artefacts and art works borrowed from museum and private collections from across the country. The exhibition narrates a story of Canada through the lens of First Nations’ resilience.

This conversation is cohosted by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and NSCAD University as part of NSCAD’s Public Lecture Series. The exhibition was produced by the Art Museum at the University of Toronto in partnership with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and has been made possible in part by the Government of Canada and the Ontario Arts Council. Lead Sponsor: Donald R. Sobey Foundation.

ASL interpreters will be available.
