Michael Fernandes is a Trinidad-born artist who came to Canada in the 1960s to study at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. His works often rely on polemical constructs like “us and them” to provoke a self-recognition on the part of the viewer. His installations have a sense of improvisation and literalism, which results in an intimacy and directness and opposes the packaged, the streamlined and the simulated. One could say—at least metaphorically—that his work is in the first person, present tense, and that it stands against facade and spectacle in favour of activism.

At NSCAD, where he has taught since 1973, Michael is known for the subtlety of his pedagogical methods. He has exhibited extensively across Canada and abroad. In 2020, Fernandes was the recipient of the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts.

Né à Trinidad, Michael Fernandes est venu au Canada dans les années 1960 pour étudier au Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal. Ses œuvres dépendent souvent de concepts polémiques comme le « nous et eux » pour provoquer une reconnaissance de soi de la part du spectateur. Ses installations donnent l’impression d’improvisation et de littéralisme, ce qui entraîne l’intimité et la franchise plutôt que le conditionné, le rationalisé et le simulé. On pourrait dire, du moins de façon métaphorique, que son œuvre est à la première personne, au temps présent, et qu’elle s’oppose à la façade et au spectacle au profit de l’activisme.

Michael Fernandes a enseigné depuis 1973 au Nova Scotia College of Art. Il a grandement exposé ses œuvres au Canada et à l’étranger. En 2020, Fernandes fut récipiendaire du Prix du Gouverneur général en arts visuels et en arts médiatiques.
