Background

Dr. Nicole Lee is an Assistant Professor in Art Education at NSCAD University. She is a first-generation Chinese Canadian from Hong Kong who has lived across Turtle Island (Canada): first Tkaronto (Toronto, ON), the place in the water where the trees are standing; then K’emk’emeláy̓ (Vancouver, BC), the place of many maple trees; and currently Kjipuktuk (Halifax, NS), the great harbour. Dr. Lee holds a PhD in Curriculum Studies, with a concentration in Art Education, from The University of British Columbia. Her SSHRC-funded dissertation, Squares for Breathing, Becoming, and Beholding: Cultivating a Relationship with the Unknown, was awarded the Elliot Eisner Doctoral Research Award in Art Education, the Canadian Association for Curriculum Studies Dissertation Award, and the Ted T. Aoki Prize for Outstanding Dissertation in Curriculum Studies. She earned a Master of Education, a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts, Studio), and a Bachelor of Education (Visual Arts and English in the Intermediate/Senior divisions) from York University. Now at NSCAD University, Dr. Lee teaches in the Master of Arts in Art Education (MAAE) program, Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program, and Visual Arts Certificate for Teachers (VACT) program.

CURRENT RESEARCH AND/OR CREATIVE PRACTICE

Dr. Nicole Lee is an a/r/tographer who engages in artmaking and philosophy in tandem to advance concepts. Her research practices are emergent, creative, and contemplative living inquiries into inspirited curricular moments that attune to the affective rhythms surrounding people, histories, and places. Dr. Lee’s works are meditations on what it means to live well. She is a published author and editor of anthologies in a/r/tography and curriculum studies. Her research interests are at the intersections of a/r/tography, curriculum theory, philosophy, writing, community, spirituality, thanatology, aesthetic education, and arts-based educational research.

Serving as Vice President of the Canadian Society for Education Through Art / Société canadienne d’éducation par l’art (CSEA/SCÉA; https://csea-scea.ca) and Chair of the 2024 CSEA/SCÉA Conference (https://2024.csea-scea.ca), Dr. Lee is committed to advancing art education in community.
