Tell us about yourself

I am a Ghanaian-Canadian visual artist, community arts facilitator and researcher. In 2022, I relocated from Toronto, Ontario to Halifax to pursue a Master of Arts in Art Education at NSCAD University. Before this, I completed a BFA in the Drawing and Painting program at OCAD University in 2021. My artistic practice involves using figurative art, abstraction, and sacred African braiding practices to depict contemporary visual representations of Black womanhood and West African aesthetics. I draw inspiration for my art from memories, photos, and traditional African hairstyles to explore themes of spirituality, community,  womanhood and nature. My research interests include topics such as Black feminist theory in art education, art education for social change, collaborative art practices, and curriculum development.

What motivated you to apply to the Master of Arts in Art Education
I applied to the MAAE program to enhance my understanding of art education through research. I was attracted to NSCAD’s program because it offers different streams. My interest in studying art education began in high school when I volunteered and worked as a community arts facilitator for several organizations in Ontario. Since then, I have continued working with youth groups by organizing and facilitating art workshops.

What are you doing now?
I am currently conducting research that focuses on the art educational experiences of Black women artists in Nova Scotia and Ontario who have enrolled in undergraduate art or design programs. The study includes arts-based focus groups, interviews and a virtual exhibition. The narratives and artwork shared by the artists will offer insight into the strengths and challenges of their art programs, which will be included in my thesis publication.

How is the MAAE program preparing you for current or future work?
The MAAE program has expanded my knowledge and practical skills in conducting research and facilitating art in a variety of settings, including schools, community centers, and museums. The courses I have completed, such as Community and Art Education, Contemporary Issues in Art Education, and Research Methods in Art Education, have effectively prepared me to develop an interdisciplinary approach for my current research-creation thesis. These courses have equipped me with valuable teaching strategies for the arts and have broadened my understanding of critical pedagogy in art education.

Describe one of your favourite memories or experiences while you were studying at NSCAD.
I love the MAAE studio gatherings! These events offer a space for meaningful connections with my peers. I value the opportunity to share ideas and artwork in a supportive environment, which helps to strengthen the sense of community within the program.
