On behalf of the NSCAD Alumni Association, I wanted to reach out to you. It’s important we stay connected as we adjust to our new reality.

We’re living in a confusing time. Many of us are unsure of what to do and how to feel as the world grapples with the global pandemic brought on by COVID-19. It’s okay to be scared, confused, or anxious. But remember, we’re all in this together – and the most important thing is that you and your family stay safe.

Lately, I’ve had a lot of time to think about what it means to be an artist at a time like this. You may have, too.

There’s a lot of uncertainty in the world today, but one thing I know for certain is that art, design and craft have a role to play in keeping us connected during troubling times. It’s art and design that will enable us to come together while staying apart.

Now, more than ever, we need art, design and craft to communicate our thoughts and feelings, to lift people up when they’re down, and to motivate us all.

Through our ideas, our visions, and our ingenuity, we can inspire our fellow artists and designers to keep creating, too – and I can think of no better place to start than with our own NSCAD family!

That’s why I’m pleased to invite you to join NSCAD’s new #KeepCreatingNSCAD initiative.

Our #KeepCreatingNSCAD campaign is about inspiring NSCAD students, faculty, and even our fellow alumni to stay connected – and to keep their creative flames burning in challenging times.

Participating is easy. All you need to do is:

  1. Snap a photo or grab a video of the creative project you’ve been working on. We know creative expression takes many forms, so feel free to think outside the box;
  2. Share it on your social media channels – Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook – using the hashtag #KeepCreatingNSCAD;
  3. If you want, include a short message of support or inspiration for members of our NSCAD family who may be experiencing difficulties right now or to brighten someone’s day; and
  4. Then, follow #KeepCreatingNSCAD on your own social media accounts to keep up with what other artists and designers in our NSCAD community have been creating. The NSCAD website will also feature a selection of your contribtions.

Personally, I’ve challenged myself to complete a daily sketch while social distancing which you can see on my Instagram feed –  check out ArtPaysMe. I can’t wait to share with you what I’ve been working on via our new hashtag – make sure to check #KeepCreatingNSCAD to see my latest work. I’ll be watching for yours.

These are trying times for many artists, crafters and designers in our community – and creating can be hard. However, we know that the greatest inspiration can come from the darkest days.

Help me shine the light of inspiration on our NSCAD family by taking part in our #KeepCreatingNSCAD campaign today!

I can’t wait to see what you’ve been working on.
