To the NSCAD Community,
Over the last few weeks we have witnessed a disturbing rise in violence towards the Asian communities in Canada and around the world. Anti-Asian racism is not new – it is oppressive, structural, and systemic with a long, shameful history in Canada. However, during the pandemic we have seen an alarming spike in the occurrence of hate crimes. NSCAD University full-heartedly condemns these horrific acts and all forms of racism and violence. We stand in solidarity and partnership with the Asian community, and with everyone dedicated to fighting racism and discrimination wherever and whenever it happens.
We recognize the importance of our role in creating positive change and we are prioritizing this work through our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. We must continue to reflect and examine our institutional processes and resources to ensure students, staff and faculty feel safe and supported at NSCAD.
A reminder to all NSCAD students that we offer counselling services free of charge. International students have access to additional psychological services through their insurance provider, Student VIP International – including counselling services in their home country or in their native language. NSCAD University’s Office of Opportunity and Belonging can also help troubleshoot, triage or escalate any instances of abuse, racism or discrimination experienced by a student on campus.
